Closed‑Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras provide live visual monitoring, allowing operators to quickly verify incidents, stalled vehicles, or unusual congestion patterns. Vehicle Detection Systems (VDS)—including loop detectors, radar, and other sensor technologies—collect detailed traffic data such as speed, volume, and occupancy, forming the backbone of traffic flow analysis. Ramp Metering Systems (RMS) use this data to regulate the rate at which vehicles enter freeways, smoothing merging operations and reducing bottlenecks. Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) rely heavily on these field devices that continuously observe roadway conditions and relay real‑time information to a Traffic Management Center (TMC). The TMC uses the information from these systems to make operational decisions and, when necessary, adjust strategies in real time. In addition to managing traffic flow, the TMC communicates directly with drivers through Changeable Message Signs (CMS), posting warnings about incidents, travel time information, and urgent notifications such as Sig Alerts or Amber Alerts. Together, these technologies create a coordinated system that enhances situational awareness, improves roadway efficiency, and supports safer travel across the network. In addition to the individual elements, ITS relies on a communication infrastructure to relay information between
elements/devices and the TMC. The infrastructure used—whether wired, such as fiber optic cables, or wireless—depends on the complexity of the system.
