Ocean Blvd. Street Improvement, Coronado

The Ocean Boulevard Improvement Project fulfilled the City of Coronado’s vision of enhancing the pedestrian experience along this oceanfront corridor from the Hotel Del Coronado to the North Island Naval Base.  Prior to the project, the walkway was as narrow as five feet in some locations, with street furniture and a rock revetment encroaching into the pedestrian pathway providing little space in some locations to walk side-by-side or pass.  After the completion and vetting through the public and City Council several options, the final project including narrowing the roadway to allow a replaced, wider sidewalk, relocation of street furniture and streetlights immediately adjacent to the rock revetment, and curb bulb-outs at roadway intersection to improvement pedestrian mobility while still maintain a consistent traffic flow at reasonable lane widths.  Constraints of the project included aged infrastructure, including a 1930s era deep rock revetment, reportedly imported from the Carrizo Gorge area by Spreckels by train, re-construction of sewer pumping, and storm inlets, compliance with storm water regulations, and Coastal Commission guidelines.

LIN Consulting, Inc. prepared street lighting plans for the Ocean Boulevard Street Improvement project in the City of Coronado.  The plan set included two sheets of street lighting and consisted of relocating the existing lights due to the sidewalk widening improvements.  Close coordination with the City was required due to the project requirement of adequately lighting the pedestrian sidewalk and providing the required space for the pedestrian activity.
